Conditioning Our Children to Live in Fear of Climate Change

“The sky is falling. The sky is falling!” We are all familiar with the popular children’s tale Chicken Little. Oddly enough, a parody of this story has literally been used to spread fear among our youth and shelve legitimate environmentalism or for a panic-based mindset. How quickly we forget terrorists behind every tree, WMDs in Iraq, and our most recent panic-stricken example of “bread and circuses” - RussiaGate.

More than a decade ago I wrote an article pointing out that both terrorism and climate change were being used by opposite ends of the political spectrum to spread fear. I wrote in that article that a whole generation of human children are being taught that their species is to blame for destroying the earth. I warned that this would eventually create massive fear and species self-hatred. I think we’re there.

Back in March, students around the world skipped class to rally against climate change and demand action. Let me begin by saying two things. I’m very proud of this generation taking to streets to fight for its values. We’ve had a couple generations in a row, including mine, that never really did that. Secondly, I applaud them for their concern about the environment. Legitimate concern and action to improve our environment remains an urgent need that, and I’m just going to be frank, has been sidelined by climate change fear-mongering.

There is legitimate environmentalism and then there is, well, just fear-mongering. We should all work together to clean the air, clean the water, break our addiction to fossil fuels, and become a greener civilization. However, we need to do this from a place love and hope not fear.

Fear, as I have written about dozens of times over the years, is every bit as destructive as any climate crisis. A fearful mindset leaves human beings open to mass manipulation. That’s why fear is always used to gin up war. People make bad decisions when they’re afraid and panicked.

There has been much talk in recent months about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal.” There has been legitimate criticism and there have been distortions from the fossil fuel industry and their friends in government. Her plan is based on the recent mantra in left circles that we only have 12 more years before the effects of climate change become irreversible and Earth is lost.

This claim is based on the latest finding by the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Last October that body issued a report that made this claim in bold highlight. We’ll leave aside for the moment that such things can be measured so precisely and go right to the fear part…the part I warned about more than 10 years ago.

One of the leaders of the global student protests - a Swedish teenager named Greta Thunberg - spoke to the World Economic Council. As recorded in the New York Times, she said the following.

Adults keep saying, ‘We owe it to the young people to give them hope,’ but I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.”

Bingo. We’ve reached the stage we did with the War on Terror where people were afraid there was a terrorist behind every tree. She’s living in fear and in panic every day. She wants everybody to live in fear and panic about this.

If the recent RussiaGate events teach us anything, they should teach us that the world is full agendas. That what we hear in the media and even from science is not always straight unadulterated fact. We have created that generation living in day-to-day fear over this, as I warned.

They’ve been told that it is a scientific certainty that 12 years from now the Earth is irreversibly damaged. They’ve heard since they were children that every hurricane is evidence that things are getting worse and every year is getting warmer than before. What else are they to think?

She should be mad at the adults, but not for the reasons she thinks. She should be mad at the adults for forcing her to grow up in a world where fears like this are perpetrated, while we HAVE RIGHT NOW TODAY the technology to make the changes she is seeking.

She should be mad at us for buying into a terrorist behind every tree and a climate in rebellion because both are means of tightening control on the freedoms human beings fought for centuries to achieve. Look around you, freedom speech, personal privacy, and legitimate elections are in retreat all over the “free world.” Climate change (along with terrorism) is one of the big issues being used to sell this emerging tyranny.

I’m an old school environmentalist. We SHOULD and we MUST do everything we can to care for our world because we DO have only one. That said, 2030 will come and go, I guarantee it, and the sky will not have fallen. In the meantime, though, the people spinning the fear in this teenager’s mind a millions like her around the world will have expanded the frontiers their oligarchic tyranny.

When your freedoms are gone, the climate and the terrorists will vanish into the next tale spun to maintain control.
