The Final Steps to Truth

The outward work will never be puny, if the inward work is great.
~Meister Eckhart

If you spend a few minutes on social media, you'll find believers believers everywhere. We have political believers, religious believers, scientific believers. Whatever the area of endeavor or study, there are people firmly stating their beliefs and declaring others to be wrong. We live in a world filled with beliefs and belief makers, but we lack knowing. Belief is no substitute for knowing. Knowing is the pathway to truth..

Beliefs are meant for mass consumption and are mechanisms of mass control for the belief-makers. Just follow the formula we lay out. No thought is necessary. Just believe, baby! Beliefs are the equivalent of salvation-in-a-box or enlightenment-in-a-box. They give people comfort as they dish out wisdom through the drive-thru window.

Stop acting so small. You are the Universe in ecstatic motion.

Knowing has always been a threat to power. For knowing requires thought, contemplation, and personal revelation. These are considered existential threats to the status quo. Is it any wonder that Constantine and the church leaders banished Gnosticism (from the Greek gnosis meaning knowledge)? They were not interested in knowers possessing a source of unshakeable wisdom and insight within. They sought believers who were much easier to mold to the objectives of the emperor. Very little has changed in the 1500 years since.

How can we recognize the difference between someone who knows and someone who believes, especially in a world where belief is passed off as knowing?

Belief is a mass phenomenon. A church or a mosque or a temple filled with people who all agree is belief. Knowing is an individual endeavor. It's a dance between one soul and the universe that spawned it.

Belief lashes out at those who disagree. Knowing has the wisdom to see that everyone is on his own or her own path. The one who knows is not in conflict with others who know, even when their knowing has arrived in different places. Belief demands conformity to the system and preaches that the destination is reached by following that system.

Knowing can begin as belief, but it is only attained by leaving that foundation and venturing out on the path of the sage. This is what the Buddha meant when he stated, "The greats of the past only show the way. You must make your own effort."

There is no system of belief that can lead to enlightenment, salvation, or even scientific knowledge. Those who have pushed the envelope for themselves and for humanity have always operated outside the box of orthodoxy - political, religious, or scientific.

Yesterday we obeyed kings and bent our necks before emperors. But today we kneel only to truth, follow only beauty, and obey only love.
~Khalil Gibran

The final steps to truth are not taken en masse. There will be no one there to provide the map. They are taken bravely by knowers, passing through the cloud of unknowing, back the world where knowing and unknowing are abandoned for remembering.
